This means that your purchase through these links may result in a few cents in payment to me, to support creating further resources like this one! That being said, I will never suggest supplies that I do not personally use and fully recommend.

In case you’ve been living under a freekin’ rock, April 29th marks the beginning of the #ShowMeYourDrills challenge! It’s the perfect challenge for anyone who has been interested in learning modern calligraphy or brush calligraphy, or for people who have been doing it for years and need to step back and remind themselves to practice!

We’ll be going over daily worksheets of the basic strokes. (If you have no idea what ‘basic strokes’ are, check out this article before you read any further!) Over the course of four weeks, we’ll practice the strokes over and over- in a series of practice “drills”!

The challenge is totally FREE. It gives you access to printable PDF worksheets for each day, as well as a guide to my favourite (and recommended) supplies, and a series of videos to walk you through everything from setting up your supplies to actually using them.

You’ll also get access to a private Facebook community of like-minded people who are signed up for the challenge!

Now- once you’ve signed up, you may have questions. Make sure you’ve joined the Facebook group, if you’re on Facebook. On the group, you’ll find answers to lots of questions and you’ll have the ability to ask others for help!

But if you’re not on Facebook, that’s fine! Here’s a list of FAQ’s I’ve compiled (since I thought I’d be able to get to everyone’s questions, but then over 11,000 of you signed up!)

  1. How much does this cost?
The entire challenge is TOTALLY FREE! *cue confetti* At the end of the drills challenge, I’m gonna give you access to my series of workbooks, which are the “next steps” in learning. If you decide you wanna continue on with us, each of those workbook/video combos does have a fee. You can either buy the entire bundle upfront (at the end of the challenge), or buy them one at a time (basically once a month as we go!).
  2. I haven’t received any documents/emails. Can you please resend them?
Here are the steps you need to make sure you’ve taken, and some reasons why you may not have received the emails.
    a) You need to have signed up. If you’re only on the Facebook group, and haven’t actually signed up for the challenge, you need to do that. www.showmeyourdrills.com
    b) You need to have gotten a “confirm you’re a human” email. If you didn’t receive that,
    i) check your junk
ii) check every other folder (promotions, trash, filters, etc!)
iii) do a search for “The Happy Ever Crafter” in “all mail”
iv) re-sign up. If you had a typo in your email address, you wouldn’t get anything.
    c) if you’ve done all of the above and haven’t received anything, triple check that nothing is in your spam, junk, promo, filters— and then send me an email so I can help you troubleshoot. **NOTE: If you’re using a strange email provider (ie. not gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc), mailchimp may not recognize it for some reason. If you don’t have a common email address, consider making one for the challenge. It will ensure you receive all the emails!**
  3. Do I have to buy all the supplies on the list?
Nope- in fact, I suggest you start with really minimal supplies. Make sure you’ve read through the Supplies PDF and watched the video, so you understand the options! You’ll choose from EITHER a small pen, a big pen, a pointed pen, or an iPad.
  4. Where can I find supplies in my city?
I have no idea. LOL. Sorry! I can only recommend online sources! All of the links in my Supplies Guide are clickable to Amazon! *unless you’re located in Ottawa, Canada. In that case, Wallacks, DeSerres and Michaels all have options!*
  5. Can I use Crayola Supertips?
If you *must*, you can use Supertips. They’re NOT brush pens, and they’re not flexible… but if you manoeuvre them in the right way, they can work in a similar fashion. They’ll require a different technique but it’s possible. It’s just not “brush” calligraphy! I have a tutorial on using Crayola markers for calligraphy— find it here!
  6. What happens if I don’t have a printer?
There are tons of places you can get things printed for a small fee. The other option is to just look at the drills on your computer (or phone) screen, and copy them freehand. You don’t have to print and trace!!
  7. How long per day should I be spending on this? I don’t have much time.
The more time you can devote to practicing your drills, the better. But broken down into this challenge, it should take you about 20-30 minutes to complete each day’s section and watch the videos.
  8. What if I want to do this, but I can’t do it now?
Don’t you worry your pretty little head. It’ll still be available for you. You can join any time, and still get everything for free!

  1. I really love the idea of getting into calligraphy, I just didn’t know where to start from…so thank you so much for this challenge nd for being so generous about it!

  2. Hi, I just joined today and am way behind… Do I just start with day one or do I practice all of the drills at once to catch up to the right day as everyone else?

  3. You really make it appear so easy together with your presentation however I find this matter to be really one thing that I think I’d never understand.

It sort of feels too complex and extremely large for me.
I’m having a look forward for your subsequent submit, I’ll attempt to get the hold of it!

      1. Show Me Your Drills is free! 🙂 I do have more advanced workbooks available to purchase. They’re in CAD, but your bank should do the currency conversion for you when you order. 🙂

    1. I want to learn calligraphy and I like how details to explain your videos on YouTube.i also would like to receive the manual book/notebook that will help me to practice the strokes.

  4. Greetings! I very much liked your introduction video that clarifies all the problems that potential students have trying to search the Internet for a solid foundation as to how to even start to lean Calligraphy.

I’m confused though… your ShowMeYourDrills website refers to an October date for signup… however, it also says “sign up now for free.”

Do you know when you next free course is? And do you have a comparable fee-based course that one can begin anytime? Thanks for your help! ~Cynthia

    1. Hey Cynthia, this is outdated! We started a semester in October (2018), but are currently wrapping it up! 🙂 The next one will start at the end of April- signups will be available really soon for that! 🙂

  5. Becca, I was fortunate in being able to see your presentation on the 9 or 10 basic strokes, but I have
lost my copy of “Show me your Drills. I am not very good on the computer and do not participate in
Facebook. What I really need is a copy of your 9 to 10 basic strokes.HELP!! Andy L.

  6. I travel a lot so the iPad version is really convenient for me but I feel like I’m missing the skill of usIng real pens. Thoughts on doing both?

    1. The iPad definitely makes it easier, but it’s still good practice! I generally suggest mastering 1 at a time, but it’s totally personal. If you find switching back and forth no problem, go for it! Any practice is good practice.

  7. Hi, saw your videos on you tube , best ever tutorial i have saw with straight forward techniques , want to learn more of calligraphy.

Tell me what you thought!
